Been a long and fairly hot summer. Most days been perfect for skateboarding. I feel pretty pleased wiyh myself.
I have been skating quite well. Learned new lines.
We have been going to different new skateparks and that has been fun this summer. I dare trying out new spots.
It´s quite an achievement.
Nowadays I do feel that I can say that it is possible to make skateboarding a sport of your choice even at my age. I love it and I do make some progress. At least enough to get exercise from an hour of a fun and challenging activity.
And last but not least you can skate together even if you’re at different skill levels. You do what you can and want and your friends do what they want.
Last session i Highvalley it was me, the skater, my nephew and his little daughter all having fun together. So great! Love it!
What you need as an excercise is something that you do because you can´t be without it, something that makes you tick. For me it used to be running and fitness classes. Not anymore!
Well it is only the beginning of July and I have already done what I intended to accomplish this summer. So now I can focus on higher speed, trying out carving in other skateparks, kickturns in our countryside mini…
Here we go. I managed to stay in the larger bowl and do a backside carve. Actually after a couple of rounds I could do two backside and one frontside carve 🙂 This was never ever going to happen but it did.
I am over the moon.
I started the morning skate session feeling uninspired, tired and heavy and ended the session feeling great with a smile on my face.
Pretty empty as usual on a work day morning.
I could practice rolling in from the upper waterfall. Makes it possible to use the two connected bowls through the pipe. I can roll down through the first bowl into the pipe and swirl around in the second bowl and then back. So the speed I get from the two waterfalls is still to high for me. I can´t stop and carve in the deep first pool. Thers is no nice curve to easily carve backside and get the carving going. Have to take the round in the other bowl to lower my speed.
Then I got company and had to keep to the one bowl. Back to what I can handle😂.
But now I tried getting up on the bump in the middle and it worked. Now I just have to roll down again and not jump off.
So maybe this summer will prove to be pushing me forward.
Happy days. The rain that was expected did not happen. I had the whole park to myself. So I could do exactly whatever I wanted.
A little ditch, bumps, trying to get up on the bump in the big bowl, mini, the upper bowl and then I tried to start from the second waterfall. Two waterfalls in a row. The speed became really high by my standards. Luckily there is a long way to help speed out through the pipe. Now one around so I could do over and over again. So fun.
At last I manage to do kickturns! What an achievement. So now I am pretty content for a while. Though it is not far up at all. Got to go further up. Practice, practice, practice…Higher and higher.
But still this is fun and makes it easier to claim a space in the queue to the half pipe.
Nowadays skating as a beginner and being a lady is not that unique. Quite a few. So next summer Highvalley will be ours!
I was lucky this morning. No crowd and the cement was dry. More often then not there is some heavy rainfalls.
I had great fun in the bumps and the little waterfall in one of the bowls. One is supposed to be able to learn how to keep speed even if one can´t drop so this is the place to start.
It is not much of a waterfall so it is not scary. Felt good and soft. Very good for my foot I think. Next step will be trying the steeper waterfall that is supposed to be easy tough it looks, well, too steep. If the weather Gods are nice that might be tomorrow.
Watch this film…its sums up the gender aspect of the skateboard culture…that hopefully is changing.
I am myself past the age where this matters so much. But I can still see and feel uncomfortable when I encounter the misogynist attitude that can be found in skate culture. Skateboard decks with naked women, jokes that aren´t that funny, pictures on FB that supposedly should trigger likes…
But there is definitely a change in attitudes…more and more girls and ladies skate!
I like skating because I need something challenging and fun to make me want to do any kind of exercise 🙂
I even admit that I hang around in the flat part of the half pipe when I talk to old friends that belong to my skateboard social circle.
Now I’ve achieved what I intended. To some extent. It is never to late to skate. It’s a fun form of excersise.
Unlike running in skating you have to learn new stuff. It’s not only about getting more fit. One day something, like manage to kickturn, seems totally impossible. Then all of a sudden it works. That’s a superfun feeling.
The last year ladyskating has become quite popular and lots of ladies, mostly in their 20s or 30s, have begun. That’s cool.
I am quite unsociable so I keep out of that stuff. I like the meditative part of skating. It’s stress relieving and an antidepressant.
Now I come to the point where I almost have no trouble admitting what kind of exercise I practice. I am no longer a bystander.
I feel over the moon 🙂 It’s a good thing to have something that makes your day!
Kickturns been so hard to learn. Some kind of mental block. But the…
I got it. I can turn. Not 180° but enough. So now I have to work on getting higher.
This achievement gave me an even better feeling than learning how to pump to get going back and forth. That was a milestone. But without being able to pump up in the half pipe…Then there is nothing to do at all. So that was sort of like being able to ride the lift up when your skiing…a must!
